It just wasn't called motocross back then.Motocross started in Europe in the 1960's. Riders used four-stroke street bikes with Husquavarna being the most popular type. these early races were all held outdoors. From 1969-1970 Japan started to produce 2 stroke dirt bikes. The top makes were Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki. The top riders still came from England, Belgium, and Germany. Roger Decoster, who is now the head of Suzuki motocross team, was a five time world champion and is still considered to the best motocross rider of all time.

Jeremy McGrath became a household name as a supercross champion and won five world titles.
