ALL ABOUT MOTOCROSS

A SHORT HISTORY MOTOCROSS AND SUPERCROSS

Most people believe that motocross started after World War II, but the sport actually originated in England as cross-country races known as scrambles around 1920. It just wasn't called motocross back then.Motocross started in Europe in the 1960's. Riders used four-stroke street bikes with Husquavarna being the most popular type. these early races were all held outdoors. From 1969-1970 Japan started to produce 2 stroke dirt bikes. The top makes were Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki. The top riders still came from England, Belgium, and Germany. Roger Decoster, who is now the head of Suzuki motocross team, was a five time world champion and is still considered to the best motocross rider of all time.

The first Motocross races weren't held in the United States until 1959, and the sport didn't get wide exposure until appearing on ABC's "Wide World of Sports" in 1969.In the 1970's motocross started to become popular in the United States. Most races were held outdoors in front of small crowds. Also during 1970's the suspension used on these dirt bikes improved dramatically and the suspension went from three inches to twelve inches. They could go faster and do bigger jumps.

Supercross is really nothing more than motocross on an artificial course constructed inside a stadium. In 1978 The 1st supercross event was held in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Large crowds of over 50,000 people would come to watch. The Americans started to compete against the Europeans. Riders like Marty Smith and Bob Hannah became the new champions in the 1980's. Jeremy McGrath became a household name as a supercross champion and won five world titles.
